Beat Burnout and Find Flow: My Goldilocks Goal Story

Stress, Flow, and Finding Balance

Stress is a balancing act. Too much, and I feel overwhelmed and suffer burnout. Too little, and I fall into boredom and disengagement. I’ve found that sweet spot, where I feel energized and motivated, is when I’m in a state of flow. That’s the outcome I strive for in my own life and what I encourage through my corporate wellness coaching.

Enter the Goldilocks Goal

This is where Goldilocks goals come in. They’re not too easy, not too hard, but just right. Designed to challenge without overwhelming, they’re powerful tools for finding flow in your health, work, or personal life.

When you’re setting a Goldilocks goal, make sure it checks these boxes:

  • Challenging enough to stay engaging

  • Achievable based on your current skills and resources

  • Specific and clear, with a defined measure of success

  • Time-bound, giving structure and urgency

These elements create the ideal conditions for entering that fully-immersed, high-performance state where everything just clicks.

The Science Behind It: The Yerkes-Dodson Law

Yerkes-Dodson stress curve used in corporate wellness coaching to illustrate peak performance at moderate stress levels

This curve illustrates how performance improves with increased stress up to a point—but then drops sharply when stress becomes excessive. Goldilocks goals are designed to keep you in that sweet spot of healthy tension and sustainable motivation.

My Story: From Complacency to Flow

I found myself in a state of complacency, not unhappy, but under-challenged. I wanted to feel more impactful in my work, but I didn’t want to upend my life. With two kids in school, a packed sports schedule, a new puppy, and a demanding fitness and coaching routine, time was tight.

So I set a Goldilocks goal: go back to “school” for additional learning, accreditations, and certifications. It was a challenge I didn’t have to take on, but I wanted to. It stretched me just enough to reignite my motivation.

Night classes and study groups were tough, but being part of a learning community and getting feedback helped me tap into a growth mindset. I surrounded myself with like-minded people: on my team at work and in my learning cohort. With support from my family, coworkers, and employer, I not only completed my goal—I enjoyed the process and found flow again.

Set Your Own Goldilocks Goal

If you’re feeling bored, burnt out, or unmotivated in your work, fitness, or daily routine, try these five steps:

  1. 🧠 Assess your current skill level: Be honest about your strengths and areas for growth.

  2. 🎯 Choose a goal just beyond your comfort zone: It should stretch you, but not break you.

  3. 🪜 Break it down: Divide it into small, manageable steps to build momentum.

  4. 🔁 Track progress and adjust: If it feels too easy or too hard, tweak it. Flow is flexible.

  5. 🎉 Celebrate small wins: Progress fuels motivation and prevents burnout.

Your Turn

What’s one thing you’ve been putting off because it felt too small or too big? Reframe it. Shrink it. Stretch it. Shape it into a Goldilocks goal: one that challenges you just enough to spark growth, without overwhelming your life?

FAQs: Finding Your Just-Right Fit

Absolutely. Goldilocks goals are a perfect fit for corporate wellness coaching because they help employees stay engaged, avoid burnout, and grow without becoming overwhelmed. Whether you're guiding a team or setting personal goals, this approach encourages sustainable progress.

Start by identifying what feels missing—energy, impact, creativity, focus. Choose something that nudges you in that direction. Corporate wellness coaching often starts here too: uncovering what matters most to you and using that to spark meaningful progress.

If it doesn’t require a little discomfort, it’s probably too easy. If it’s keeping you up at night, it’s likely too big. A good Goldilocks goal sits in that middle space. It stretches you, but still feels doable with effort and support.
